Refinery
My sound design process is inherently meticulous, and requires a great deal of discipline and self-reflection to create the output that I desire. I wanted to curate an immersive experience that honors this work ethic, while preserving an intentional ambiguity around time throughout the process. Over the summer, I did not listen to music at all for two months, and this deliberate silence became a way to recalibrate my attention. Restructuring how I spent my spare time allowed my mind to more sharply focus on the present. My research on Tarek Atoui during this semester deepened my appreciation for this period of quiet, as his work emphasizes experiencing sound in a novel and raw format. These ideas and experiences helped in developing Refinery, which uses cyclical imagery and music that I have produced to represent the nature of reshaping one’s mental and emotional processes. The piece is meant to evoke the beginning of a narrative, setting the stage for a story without having to continuously use explicit words to do so.
